When Opening Day arrives, the New York Mets won’t have their best starting pitcher available.
Due to an injury, Mets star Kodai Senga will not be available for action at the start of the 2024 season. Though the Mets’ starting rotation will be thin to start the season, hopefully he is not out for the long run.
In an attempt to bolster the rotation specifically this summer, New York signed pitchers on shorter contracts who have the ability to recover. Despite Senga’s current absence, the Mets appear to be in a better position, but they might still use one more starter.Veteran starter Mike Clevinger is one player that is available and would be a good fit for New York. With seven seasons of experience, he has a career 3.45 ERA and appears to be within the Mets’ budget. Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports that Clevinger is reportedly seeking a two-year contract for about $20 million.
“Veteran free-agent starter Mike Clevinger has informed teams that he is seeking a two-year deal in excess of $20 million,” stated Nightengale. With the Chicago White Sox during the 2023 season, Clevinger recorded a 3.77 ERA in 24 starts. He would undoubtedly be less expensive than someone like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery and is still available in free agency.
As at the end of the 2023 campaign, New York appears to be in a better position. If Senga is sidelined for little time, the Mets ought to be able to contend for a postseason berth. Including someone such as Clevinger would be beneficial.
