Wes Phillips, the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated last Friday, raising questions about his future.
After the Vikings defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 3-0 on Sunday, December 10, head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke about Phillips’ DWI arrest. Although Phillips went to Las Vegas with the team, the Vikings have not yet decided what will happen to the coach going forward.
“It’s going to be something we keep an eye on, but since it’s late on Friday and we’ve been gathering more information, I decided that Wes would travel and, in the end, coach today. We’ll keep processing the information as it comes in.
Without a doubt, I was really disappointed, but we want to give the facts some weight and take our time in evaluating them. It’s obvious that the league is also involved. Wes knows he didn’t live up to the expectations set by our organization and his players, and it’s critical that coaches recognize this,” O’Connell continued.
“I’ve never been around a coach as close as Wes is. I have a great deal of sympathy for him, and as an organization, we will stand by him. We also know that Wes is aware of his mistake, and we will respond appropriately as we gather more evidence and resolve the matter. But I believe we can all learn from it.
