The Minnesota Vikings have selected quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL draft after trading up one spot to acquire the tenth pick. The Vikings had originally attempted to acquire the third pick from the New England Patriots and acquire North Carolina’s Drake Maye. Minnesota gave up the 11th pick, a fourth-round and a fifth-round pick in exchange for the tenth pick and a seventh-round pick from the NY Jets. McCarthy, who won the national championship with Michigan last season, was one of six quarterbacks drafted in the first 12 picks. The 21-year-old was 27-1 as a starter for Michigan, the third-best winning percentage for a college quarterback ever and the highest since 1971. McCarthy will compete with veteran quarterback Sam Darnold for the Vikings’ starting spot, which was recently vacated by Kirk Cousins. The Big Ten Quarterback of the Year had 6,226 passing yards, 49 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions during his college career.
