A trade for a new quarterback may be necessary as there is increasing speculation in the league that the Minnesota Vikings and Kirk Cousins are divorcing, according to Matthew Coller of Purple Insider on February 5.
A Fox Sports 1 personality To put the Vikings in a strong position to select one of the best quarterbacks in this upcoming draft class, Colin Cowherd has an idea.
On February 5, Cowherd stated, “I have an idea,” on “The Herd.” The third pick goes to New England. What is sorely lacking in New England? A dramatist. I’ll give you the top pick from the following year and Justin Jefferson, who will drop from 11 to 3.
In Cowherd’s hypothetical scenario, the Patriots would receive two picks in addition to the Vikings All-Pro wide receiver in order to position themselves for their quarterback of the future.
The Vikings wouldn’t trade Caleb Williams of USC for him. However, they could still choose to take Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye of North Carolina, as Cowherd had them do.

Williams’ position as the best choice is not seriously threatened by either Daniels or Maye. Furthermore, Maye’s standing is in doubt due to Daniels’ quick ascent, so whoever goes number two may have just as much of an impact as Williams, who is expected to go first.
Releasing a rookie quarterback after he won Rookie of the Year and had four consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards or more to begin his career is also a bad idea.
Cowherd, though, thinks the Vikings are strong enough to weather the possible defeat.
It’s already Jordan Addison for them. They have their favorite tight end, T.J. Hockenson. They have skilled players, Cowherd countered. “Jordan Addison ranks as the top receiver.” They therefore have two 1s. He’s the top two in the league if he isn’t. He’s a fantastic young athlete.
Maybe make Jordan Addison an offer. However, Jordan Addison’s payment is waived for an additional three years. That’s my preference.
According to Spotrac, Jefferson has $28.9 million in cap space, so there is a financial case to be made for trading him.
However, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, general manager of the Vikings, says he gets along well with Jefferson’s delegates. Additionally, a new agreement might lessen his 2024 $19.7 million cap hit. Jeff Diamond, the former general manager of the Vikings, believes Jefferson will sign a record-breaking extension.
Unintentionally, Cowherd offered a more compelling counterargument to his fictitious trade scenario—one that might have relevance for the Vikings.
At eleven, a quarterback will be available, according to Cowherd. “What do I care if I go from 3 to 11 if I get Justin Jefferson if you think Caleb’s the dominant [No.] 1 and then you don’t have a big gap between everybody else?”
Cowherd was indifferent about the contract, which he believes will hinder the Vikings but not the Patriots, who have about $40 million more in cap space.
Cowherd responded to Jefferson’s high salary with, “Who cares?” “Your QB is not being paid by you.”
If the Vikings stay put, they might be able to choose between Michael Penix Jr. of Washington, Oregon’s Bo Nix, and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy. Throughout this process, the projected draft position for each prospect has fluctuated greatly.
