Leeds United reportedly made a move to finally sign Lewis O’Brien in the summer, but the midfielder joined Middlesbrough on loan from Forest – and now, he has undergone surgery on a fractured tibia.
O’Brien, 24, has been regularly linked with a move to Leeds over the past few seasons. But in the summer of 2022, he joined Nottingham Forest. He started well at the City Ground, under Steve Cooper.
But given Forest’s multitude of signings, he was forced to join Mateusz Klich’s DC United on loan for the second half of last term. In the summer, he moved to Middlesbrough – linking up with Sam Greenwood.
The move came about after The Sun’s Alan Nixon claimed on his Patreon channel that Leeds had ‘made a move’ for the midfielder – with a fee of £10m required. But, he joined Boro on loan for the 23-24 term.
But earlier this month, O’Brien was forced off inside the first half of a win over Watford with a fractured tibia. Now, he has confirmed on Twitter that he has had surgery. He is likely to be out for three months.
Leeds made O’Brien move: Undergone surgery on fractured tibia
Obviously not one that could have been foreseen and a real blow for O’Brien who has had to undergo a difficult couple of years in his career. Being left out at Forest, moving to America temporarily. Now, Boro.
So, the injury will have come as a massive knock but he should be back early in the new year. There is no doubt that he will still be on our shortlist given the interest in him over the years, from Elland Road.
