It has come to Matz Sels’ attention that he had not anticipated the move to Nottingham Forest to happen at the end of the January window.
The Tricky Trees officially signed the Strasbourg player on deadline day, paying €8 million to bring him in.
Now that Sels has been interviewed by La Derniere Heure, he says Nottingham Forest’s move for him was unexpected, as reported by Voetbal Nieuws.
The goalie stated, “It was not planned that I would leave in January.”
“I wanted to compete in the European Championship before perhaps searching for a different challenge. You shouldn’t dwell on the fact that the Premier League is the largest league in the world, though.
Sels added that he didn’t even have many hours to consider the possibility because he only learned of Nottingham Forest’s interest the day of the transfer.
Apparently, from Wednesday through Thursday, Chelsea and BlueCo had late-night talks with Nottingham. Everything was essentially resolved between the clubs by Thursday morning. That was my clue that it might be best to head out. The club won’t make a last-minute deal if they don’t want to let you leave.
Sels has made two starts for Nottingham Forest since joining the team, in the games against Newcastle United and Bournemouth.
Odysseas Vlachodimos may leave the Tricky Trees in the summer if a significant turnaround isn’t achieved, as he and Matt Turner are anticipated to be the team’s top candidates for the positions. Reports from the previous few days suggest that this is the case. The Reds reportedly want to receive €4-5 million in return for his sale.
A few days after the events, in what can only be described as a frantic 48 hours, RMC Sport also provided details about Sels’ transfer.
