Tim Sherwood thinks Patrick Bamford will be “ashamed” after he got Asmir Begovic sent off in Leeds United’s 1-0 win over QPR on Wednesday night.
The Whites claimed a vital win thanks to Crysencio Summerville’s goal, but Bamford was involved in a controversial moment towards the end of the game when he went down when through on goal after a challenge by Begovic which saw the goalkeeper receive a red card.
But replays showed there was no contact by Begovic and that Bamford dived, and Sherwood reacted live on Sky Sports immediately (4 October, 21:40) and was furious with the experienced striker.
I don’t think there is any (contact),” said Sherwood. “When I look at the replay. I think Patrick (Bamford) might be a little ashamed when he sees this.
“He has gone down. When you see it first, it looks like Asmir (Begovic) might have caught him with the way Patrick goes down.
“Jimmy Dunn gets done in behind. He toes it. When you look at it from a different angle. You see the gap. He doesn’t touch him and he goes down. He got a red card. Very important for this team. He has been outstanding Asmir Begovic since he has been at QPR.
Bamford is a top professional and has always been seen as one, so it’s fair to say that this decision from his is definitely out of character.
The replay is clear, there is no contact and he simply dives. But why? He’s clean through on goal and can get himself on the scoresheet with a good strike
Maybe he was worried that his touch wasn’t good enough and he’d bluffed the chance, and succumbed to temptation to make an impact when he knows that he is battling for his place in the squad.
It’s not what we want to see as fans because if it happened against us we would be furious, especially if it ended up effecting the result in a negative way.
Hopefully he won’t do it again, but there’s no need to go overboard with the reaction either. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last to do it, so fingers crossed we can all just move on now.
