The New York Mets have recently been linked to Nolan Arenado, the St. Louis Cardinals’ esteemed third baseman and 10-time Gold Glove Award winner. Following the Mets’ high-profile acquisition of outfielder Juan Soto on a 15-year, $765 million contract, reports suggest that Arenado is open to waiving his no-trade clause to facilitate a move to New York.
Arenado’s willingness to consider the Mets is notable, especially as he has also expressed openness to joining other teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox. This development comes amid the Cardinals’ intent to trade Arenado as part of a roster overhaul following consecutive seasons without postseason appearances.
In the 2024 season, Arenado’s offensive performance saw a decline, with a batting average of .272, 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a .719 OPS over 152 games. Despite this dip, his defensive prowess remains exceptional, maintaining his status as one of the premier third basemen in Major League Baseball.
For the Mets, acquiring Arenado could address potential infield uncertainties. With first baseman Pete Alonso approaching free agency, there’s speculation that current third baseman Mark Vientos might shift to first base, creating a vacancy at third. While prospects like Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio are options, Baty has yet to establish himself in the majors, and Mauricio is recovering from an ACL injury that sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.
Integrating Arenado into a lineup featuring Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Mark Vientos could rejuvenate his offensive numbers, given the enhanced protection and opportunities such a potent batting order would provide. Historically, Arenado has demonstrated significant power, achieving 30 or more home runs in seven seasons, including three with over 40 homers.
Financially, Arenado has three years remaining on his contract, with $32 million owed in 2025 and a total of $74 million over the next three years. Any trade would require the Mets to absorb a substantial portion of this salary, though it’s possible the Cardinals might agree to cover part of the financial commitment to facilitate the deal.
While discussions are in preliminary stages, the prospect of adding a player of Arenado’s caliber aligns with the Mets’ recent aggressive moves to bolster their roster and pursue a World Series title. As the offseason progresses, the situation warrants close attention from Mets fans and the broader baseball community.
