The formal start of NFL free agency is this Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern. However, by then, transfer agreements have been reached between clubs, and teams will have already agreed in principle to deals with many of the best free agents. The same applies to the Dallas Cowboys. Officially, they have signed free agents, but the players they are losing are joining new teams as soon as the starter’s gun is pulled.
Monday afternoon marks the start of the legal tampering period, which allows teams to freely communicate with targets even though deals cannot be finalised. This post will act as a log for all of the arrivals and departures.
Which Dallas free agents return to the club, which veterans get their contracts reworked to address cap ramifications, who departs to other organizations and who, if any, outside free agents agree to come to Dallas.
This will be continuously updated with confirmed reports and then again with contract details. Also included below is going to be our comp pick ledger, as some free agents qualify for the comp pick formula that will determine whether or not the Cowboys get extra picks in the 2025 NFL draft.
Reworked Zack Martin’s contract, added $9.6 million of cap space
$16.25 million in restructuring bonus (distributed over three seasons at $1 million each)
Base for 2024: $1.75 million, guaranteed
Cap Hit for 2024: $15.5 million
$10.6 million in dead money in 2025
$17.1 million in dead money in 2026
To offset the lower cap burden, the Cowboys gave Martin additional empty years on his contract. They may make him a June 1 cut the following league year, dividing the dead money loss across two seasons.
