Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Scott McTominay throughout the summer transfer window, but as yet no formal offer has been made for the Manchester United midfielder, with the Red Devils demanding £80 million for the player.
Opinion may well be divided on just how much McTominay is worth. £80 million may well be a big ask from Manchester United for a player who the Old Trafford faithful haven’t always fully appreciated, but the 26-year-old could be an inspired addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.
In Bruno Guimaraes and new signing Sandro Tonali, Newcastle already have two top-class central midfielders to call upon, who are ably supported by the likes of Joelinton, Joe Willock, and Sean Longstaff.
However, there is room in the squad at St James’ Park for another new face in this part of the pitch, especially with Champions League football to contend with this season. McTominay would be the option best suited to getting the best out of the other players in the Magpies’ midfield contingent.
What McTominay could unlock for Newcastle
McTominay isn’t a player to catch much of the limelight himself, but he does the legwork that allows those around him to flourish. Guimaraes, in particular, would benefit from his presence.
With the tenacious and hard-working 41-cap Scotland international there to offer a platform of security, Guimaraes would be free to get forward even more and exert a greater influence in the final third, comfortable in the knowledge that McTominay is behind him ready to sweep in and break up any opposition counter attacks.
A £40 million investment in McTominay would be worth it for Howe if his presence can raise the level of all those playing around him.
