According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, safety Harrison Smith, a six-time Pro Bowler, and the Minnesota Vikings have reached an agreement on a modified contract that will allow Smith to rejoin the team for his 13th NFL season.
Pelissero was informed by Smith’s agency, Athletes First, that the new agreement is for $9 million.
After joining Minnesota as the 29th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft out of Notre Dame, the 35-year-old Smith played in all 17 games the previous season and recorded 93 tackles and three sacks.
Smith is a Vikings icon who may eventually be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Smith appeared in all six Pro Bowls from 2015 to 2021 and was selected for the 2017 All-Pro team.
Having Smith’s voice and presence around is even more crucial now as the team is trying to recover from a 7-10 season, having lost offensive and defensive leaders in quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Danielle Hunter.
Financially speaking, Smith has undergone two restructurings in a row after agreeing to a new contract for the 2023 season that will pay him $8 million plus an additional $2 million in incentives.
