Jerry Jones accept blame, staying patient on contract extensions with Dak Prescott, other stars

Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons are all eyeing long-term extensions with the Cowboys in the near future

but they did toy about with their squad by signing a few lower-level free agents. While quiet offseasons have occurred before, the Cowboys have placed themselves in a difficult position by failing to make changes to the core of their roster, particularly with regard to their star quarterback in the midst of it all.

As he approaches the last year of his contract with the Cowboys, quarterback Dak Prescott of the Cowboys has the second-highest cap hit of any player in the NFL this year, according to Spotrac, with a whooping $55.5 million. The Cowboys’ offseason plans have been severely hampered by it; as training camp approaches, they presently have just under $2 million in available cap space. This year’s potential is being hampered by the uncertainty surrounding Prescott’s future, which could impede his capacity to have a successful season as he prepares for whatever comes next in his career.

Mind-boggling about this is that, if the Cowboys had some resolve and a plan for what to do next, they could simply take action to address the matter. The Cowboys presently have three options before of them, and they’re choosing the least difficult one by starting the season as they are with Prescott’s enormous salary figure. They aren’t prepared for the level of commitment required by the other two routes, and they have missed the opportunity to get instant advantages from each.

First, they might have been more aggressive in the free agent market if they had extended Prescott now, securing his spot as the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future and cutting his contract hit this season.
