Like many other teams in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers have shifted from the “big three” model to a strong supporting group centered around two standout players.
However, it isn’t performing as well as they had hoped at the beginning of the season, so an upgrade may be overdue. The opportunity that arises will probably determine how significant of an upgrade is necessary.

Wojnarowski is alluding to Durant’s track record of insisting on trades when circumstances don’t work out as he had hoped.
Throughout his career, Durant has been traded twice. In 2019, Durant made his debut with the Brooklyn Nets. In February of the previous season, he was traded to the Suns in his second trade at the trade deadline.
It was the first of the season, this last one.
Similar to the Lakers, the Suns have only won three of their previous twelve games. The Suns’ progress has been hampered by injuries, primarily to Bradley Beal, as Wojnarowski points out. As a result, the team is struggling to turn things around without the resources to pursue upgrades.
Lakers Are Sturdy Enough to Resist Kevin Durant Trade
Since he re-signed this offseason on a two-year, $36 million contract and waived his implied no-trade privileges, Russell’s name has been linked to trade rumors. The likelihood that he will be involved in any significant trade offers is further supported by his recent move to the bench.
Though he is still more of a scorer than a true point guard, he would provide the Suns with a lead guard that they do not currently have on the team.
