Dodgers officially agree to a 5-year, $74M extension with Tommy Edman

The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially agreed to a five-year, $74 million contract extension with infielder Tommy Edman, solidifying their middle infield for the foreseeable future. The agreement, announced on November 30, 2024, underscores the Dodgers’ commitment to securing versatile, high-performing players as they aim to remain perennial contenders in Major League Baseball.

Edman, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals earlier in the offseason, has quickly become a key piece of the Dodgers’ plans. Renowned for his defensive versatility and offensive consistency, Edman brings exceptional value both on and off the field. Capable of playing second base, shortstop, and even outfield when needed, he fits perfectly into the Dodgers’ philosophy of maintaining a flexible roster. His speed, ability to get on base, and defensive acumen make him an invaluable addition to an already star-studded lineup.

The 29-year-old switch-hitter had a standout 2023 season with the Cardinals, batting .272 with 12 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases. His ability to impact the game in multiple ways earned him recognition as one of the most well-rounded players in the league. The Dodgers clearly view Edman as more than just a short-term asset, choosing to lock him into a deal that runs through the 2029 season. The contract also includes incentives based on performance, which could push its overall value higher.

For the Dodgers, this move addresses their need for stability in the infield following the departure of key players in recent years. Edman’s extension signals the organization’s trust in his ability to be a cornerstone of their success moving forward. His presence alongside other stars, such as Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, bolsters the Dodgers’ lineup while giving manager Dave Roberts added strategic flexibility.

Edman expressed excitement about his future in Los Angeles, stating in a press release, “I’m thrilled to be part of such a historic franchise. The Dodgers’ culture of excellence and winning is something I’ve always admired, and I’m eager to contribute to that legacy.”

The deal reflects the Dodgers’ proactive approach to roster building, ensuring they stay competitive in the highly competitive National League West. With Edman now locked up for the long term, the Dodgers have taken a significant step toward maintaining their status as one of MLB’s elite teams. Fans can look forward to seeing Edman’s dynamic skill set in Dodger Blue for years to come.
