Liverpool’move on’ from a £38 million midfield target as Klopp focuses on two reliable substitutes.

Liverpool have reportedly abandoned their pursuit of Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, with Jurgen Klopp now focusing on alternative options.

The Portugal international has enjoyed a good first season in the Premier League, despite his team being in serious danger of relegation at one stage.

Nevertheless, his performances for Wolves caught the attention of Klopp, who has had his eye on Nunes for some time now.

It’s no secret that the manager is keen to bolster his Liverpool midfield ahead of next season, as he looks to take his team back into the top four.

Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave the club this summer. Also, the likes of Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson are all arguably past their best.

Klopp has already brought in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, for a bargain fee of £35m. But, he is still expected to bring in at least one other midfielder ahead of next season.

Liverpool are believed to be in talks with several midfielders. But, despite heavy links with a departure, it seems Nunes won’t be leaving Wolves this summer.

Liverpool scale back Nunes interest

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have now ‘moved on’ from Nunes and are pursuing other players.

As mentioned, the 24-year-old has put in some good performances for Wolves this season, despite his team’s lacklustre form

Nunes signed for the Midlands club from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of £38m last summer. Since, he has made 34 Premier League appearances, scoring one goal and making one assist.

His single league goal came against Chelsea – smashing in a sensational volley from a title angle to help Wolves to a vital 1-0 victory. So, the Molineux faithful will be hoping for more of the same next season.

As for Liverpool, they already have their eye on several potential alternatives to Nunes.

One heavily linked option is Khepren Thuram. The Nice midfielder has also attracted interest from Newcastle, but the Magpies have recently pulled out of the race.

As a result, Liverpool should be able to seal a deal for the 22-year-old for approximately £38.5m, if all goes to plan
