Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has been a member of the team since the start of the 2017 season. During that time he has seen a lot of losing and he finally reached his breaking point on Sunday following his team’s 14-7 loss to the New York Giants.
Allen began by talking about how the Giants physically dominated the game, with a lack of focus from his teammates creating problems.
He saved his harshest words for when he was asked if that situation is frustrating.
His frustration is understandable. Allen has been a star in Washington’s defense for seven years and has never even gotten close to a Super Bowl. During his time with the organization, the team has never had a winning season and has only made one playoff appearance, winning the NFC East during the 2020 season. They ended up losing their subsequent playoff game by a 31-23 margin to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Allen was originally a first-round pick by Washington (No. 17 overall) in 2017 and has made the past two Pro Bowls.
At some point he would like to be a part of a winning team, but that has not happened yet in Washington. Given the way the Commanders are playing this season offensively, it seems unlikely that is going to change anytime soon.
