Edwin Diaz has returned to the Mets’ bullpen. Now the Mets will find out just which version of their closer they have.
Diaz struggled for much of the season before hitting the IL with a right shoulder impingement.
He was activated prior to Thursday’s series finale against the Marlins at Citi Field, with left-hander Danny Young optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to open a roster spot.
After missing all of last year with a torn patellar tendon suffered during the World Baseball Classic, Diaz was solid in his first 10 appearances of this season, when he allowed just eight baserunners in 9 ⅔ innings.
But in his last five appearances, Diaz gave up eight earned runs, 10 hits and two homers in just 4 ⅓ innings.
He appeared in two rehab games with High-A Brooklyn and the Mets hope he will provide a boost to a bullpen that has been ravaged by injuries and heavy usage.
