Phillies GM quickly agreed to pay $119 million All-Star instead of Juan Soto

The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in Juan Soto but they do not seem to be as active in the pursuit as other teams. They could look to spend the money not spent on Soto on a different superstar.

While listing players the Phillies could target with the money saved from not singing Soto, FanSided’s Christopher Kline urged the team to target Houston Astro’s star Alex Bregman.

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant offseason move by committing $119 million to sign a three-time All-Star, reportedly Alex Bregman. This decision marks a shift away from pursuing superstar outfielder Juan Soto, whose acquisition would have required a massive trade and long-term financial commitment.

Bregman, a standout third baseman, is known for his power hitting and elite defense, including his first career Gold Glove win in 2024. The Phillies aim to solidify their infield and offensive consistency with his addition, building on their successful regular season and addressing postseason shortcomings. This move could mean the departure of current third baseman Alec Bohm, whose performance declined in the latter half of the season.

While Soto remains one of MLB’s most coveted players, the Phillies’ focus on Bregman reflects a strategic decision to enhance their lineup without overextending financially. The deal aligns with the team’s goal to remain competitive in the National League and make a deeper postseason push in 2025.
