Mike Cubbage, a former Major League Baseball player and coach, passed away at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. Known for his contributions to the sport both on and off the field, Cubbage’s death marks a significant loss for the baseball community.

 

Cubbage began his MLB career with the Texas Rangers in 1974 before making his mark with the Minnesota Twins from 1976 to 1980. During his time with the Twins, he played 555 games and achieved a notable highlight in 1978 by hitting for the cycle. His consistent fielding and solid batting made him a reliable utility infielder. He later joined the New York Mets, where he played his final MLB season in 1981.

 

After retiring as a player, Cubbage seamlessly transitioned into coaching and management. He started with the Mets’ minor league system, eventually becoming a key figure on the team’s major league coaching staff. He served as the Mets’ third base coach from 1990 to 1996 and briefly held the role of interim manager during the 1991 season. Cubbage’s ability to connect with players and his strategic insights earned him respect in the dugout and beyond.

 

Beyond his tenure with the Mets, Cubbage contributed to other organizations, including the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, in various coaching and scouting capacities. Notably, he was part of the scouting team for the Washington Nationals during their 2019 World Series-winning campaign, adding another accolade to his illustrious career.

 

Cubbage’s influence extended off the field as well. He was deeply involved in community efforts and was posthumously inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. A dedicated family man, he is remembered for his generosity, mentorship, and passion for the game.
