Manchester City got off to a winning start in the Champions League last night, beating Red Star Belgrade 3-1 – and there was a full debut for new signing Matheus Nunes.
City were dominant a the Etihad, but initially fell behind in the game.
Despite peppering the Red Star goal, the Serbian outfit took the lead just before half-time through Osman Bukari.
But after the break, City mounted their comeback.
Julian Alvarez scored a brilliant equaliser, before then scoring with a free-kick that was missed by goalkeeper Omri Glazer.
Rodri scored a third to put the game to bed.
It was a fine display from City, and one man who really stood out was Nunes…
It was a perfect opportunity for him to make his full debut, with Mateo Kovacic out injured.
Nunes was heavily involved, and used the ball well.
He was fairly safe with the ball, but did drive forwards a couple of times with it, showcasing that terrific ball carrying ability.
He also had a couple of opportunities to score.
After the game, Nunes took to Instagram and said ‘Incredible feeling to have made my first start for the club. Very important to start off with a win at our home. We keep on going
Hundreds of fans commented, and there was also a couple of City players who sent messages.
Two were seemingly quite impressed with Nunes, with Jack Grealish and Phil Foden both replying.
Grealish sent a few applause emojis, while Foden wrote ‘Player’.
Solid start for Nunes at Man City
In truth this was a relatively easy game for Nunes.
He often had quite a lot of time in midfield, with Red Star standing off.Kovacic doesn’t have the most perfect injury record and Rodri is bound to need rotataing more this term to avoid burnout.
But he was still pretty impressive, and he is going to fit right in at City.
