‘Crucial’ Leeds player is now set for contract talks in the new year

Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper is expected to begin contract discussions with the club in the new year as his contract expires.

According to The Athletic, Cooper has had prior talks with Leeds fall through.

The 32-year-old’s contract expires next summer, and there’s no word on whether he’ll sign an extension.

According to this story, Cooper was the focus of intense interest from Saudi Arabia this summer.

And, after hearing the substantial offer, Cooper elected to stay with Leeds, a club for whom he had nearly 300 appearances.

As a result, the Scotland international requested that Leeds consider extending his current contract for another year, until the summer of

Of course, it was formerly assumed that Leeds would not allow Cooper to depart for free, but there is now no certainty of a contract.

Cooper may still have to fight for a new deal at Leeds.
Under Marcelo Bielsa, ‘crucial’ Cooper was an automatic starter.

Cooper, though, has been benched on occasion under the current Daniel Farke era.

When Leeds beat Bristol City 2-1 before the break, the captain was merely a spectator.

Pascal Struijk captained the side alongside Tottenham Hotspur loaneJoe Rodone  at the defense.

Rodon’s case for a place in the squad will have been enhanced by his performance for Wales in their win over Croatia last night.

Cooper appears to be clearly ahead of Charlie Cresswell, a promising youngster who Farke admires.

Cooper will have to wait until the new year to see whether contract talks will extend his Elland Road stay.
